LIST: Ursula Owusu, KT Hammond and other NPP parliamentarians who lost their seats

The 2024 parliamentary elections have dealt a severe blow to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), as several high-profile Members of Parliament (MPs) have lost their seats to opponents from the National Democratic Congress (NDC). 

The losses, which include long-serving MPs and party stalwarts, mark a significant shift in Ghana’s political landscape.  

KT Hammond loses Adansi Asokwa seat

Veteran politician and MP for Adansi Asokwa, KT Hammond, was unseated by Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani of the NDC. Hammond secured 13,275 votes, while Dorani claimed victory with 14,229 votes. Mensah Abraham Justice of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) managed only 346 votes.  

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful falls in Ablekuma West

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, MP for Ablekuma West, also suffered defeat, polling 26,575 votes. Rev Kweku Addo of the NDC emerged victorious in the constituency, securing 31,866 votes to claim the seat.  

Henry Quartey unseated in Ayawaso Central  

The NPP’s Henry Quartey, who represented Ayawaso Central, lost his seat to Abdul Rauf Tongym Tubazu of the NDC. Quartey garnered 23,345 votes, significantly trailing Tubazu’s 29,755 votes. Charles Kwame Adams of the National Democratic Party (NDP) received just 163 votes.  

Dakoa Newman defeated in Okaikwei South

Dakoa Newman, the MP for Okaikwei South, joined the growing list of prominent NPP members who lost their seats. Her defeat underscores the challenges faced by the NPP in urban constituencies.  

Sylvester Tetteh loses in Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro

Sylvester Tetteh, the MP for Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro, was defeated after receiving 27,888 votes. His opponent, Okle Felix Akwetey of the NDC, won decisively with 37,473 votes.  

Twum Barimah ousted in Dormaa East

In Dormaa East, Twum Barimah lost his seat after polling 12,050 votes. The NDC’s Rachel Owusuaa narrowly defeated him with 12,310 votes, securing victory in the closely contested race.

The defeats of these political heavyweights signal a significant shift in parliamentary representation, with the NDC making notable gains. The election results reflect a changing political dynamic, as the NPP faces growing challenges in retaining its dominance in key constituencies.  

This wave of losses will likely prompt introspection within the NPP as the party analyses the causes of its setbacks in the 2024 elections.

Meanwhile, the Vice-President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flag bearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has officially conceded defeat to his main opponent, John Dramani Mahama, in Ghana’s 2024 Presidential Election.
