Longest serving Presiding Member in Ashanti Region

The Presiding Member (PM) of the Bosomtwe District Assembly, Mr Joseph Kwasi Asuming, has made history as the longest serving PM in the Ashanti Region, after he was re-elected for the sixth time at a special meeting of the assembly at Kuntanase, the district capital.

He served as the PM from 1998 to date, save 2005 and 2007, when he resigned to undertake his professional law course at the Ghana School of Law.

In the latest contest for the position, Mr Asuming, who is the assembly member for Worakese/Onwe, contested the position with three others.

They are Mr Samuel Asare Korang, the assembly member of Akokofe, Nana I.K. Nyame, a former District Chief Executive of the area, and Mr Dickson Yaw Manu, the assembly member of Feyiase.

In the first round of voting, Mr Asuming polled 28 votes, Mr Manu, 12 votes, Nana Nyame, seven votes and Mr Korang, two votes.

With none of the contestants achieving the two-thirds majority of 33 votes, the election was pushed into a run-off but Mr Asuming stood unopposed as the closest challenger while Mr Manu pulled out.

However, voting was conducted on the sole nominee who had 37 members present voting for him and 11 voting against.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic after the election, Mr Asuming, who is the District Manager of the Ghana Revenue Authority at Obuasi, said his re-election was a testimony of the faith assembly had in him.
