MP decries accidents on Nsawam bypass

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Mr Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has decried the high rate of accidents on the Nsawam bypass, resulting in fatalities, and serious and minor injuries to pedestrians, especially schoolchildren who use the road.

He has, therefore, called on the Ministry of Roads and Highways to, as a matter of urgency, take steps to curb the carnage on that section of the road.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic last Friday, Mr Annoh-Dompreh said it was unacceptable that no steps had been taken to prevent the fatalities, as the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) was yet to construct a footbridge on that section of the road.

Construction of bridge

The MP was reacting to an answer by the Minister of Roads and Highways, Alhaji Inusah A.B. Fuseini, that the construction of a footbridge on that section would be included in the GHA budget for 2016.

Alhaji Fuseini, who is also the MP for Tamale Central, had indicated that the GHA had visited the site and taken the necessary field details to design an overhead footbridge to be erected between Teshie Town Junction and Lantei Junction to facilitate the safe movement of pupils and others in those communities.

The minister had said the GHA would consider the option of erecting a traffic light at the intersection to help curb accidents on the road.

Not satisfied with the minister’s answer, Mr Annoh-Dompreh said schoolchildren were mostly knocked down or killed on the bypass.

He said the people could no longer look on while schoolchildren and other pedestrians were either killed or maimed, and entreated the GHA to, as a matter of urgency, provide an emergency relief for pedestrians.
