Baba Yara Stadium — Venue for the congress

NDC sure of uninterrupted power supply at congress

With barely three days to the upcoming national delegates congress of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, the party appears to have scaled its major headache at the venue — power supply.

The regional office of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has disconnected the stadium from power for owing GH¢ 220,000 over a period of three years; and apparently for fear that the programme might be disrupted, the NDC party bigwigs are close to concluding arrangements that will guarantee reliable power supply for the December 19-21 convocation.

Currently on the table for discussion is whether the party will be allowed to buy temporary power for the venue for the three days or fuel the two main generators, which cater for the floodlights and auxiliary offices at the 43,000-seater capacity stadium.

Beyond the power supply, the regional party organiser, Alhaji Sannie Abdulai, said every hotel in the metropolis had been booked to house the 3,750 delegates.

The delegates are made up of ministers, parliamentarians, DCEs, regional executives, constituency executives, founding fathers, council of elders and foreign delegates.

Already, representatives of the candidates have taken over the Kumasi city in an ‘underground’ cajoling and canvasing for votes.

Key taverns and known meeting places, especially at Amakom, Nhyiaeso and Ahodwo, have been taken over by people known to be loyal to a candidate or another.

“The horse trading has been intense, yet clandestinely  throwing the race wide open until the day of voting,” Alhaji Sannie told the Daily Graphic yesterday ahead of the election.

Back-up arrangements are also underway to secure hotels outside the main city to cater for ‘the overflows.’

Aside the official arrangement, the Daily Graphic can confirm that supporters of some of the delegates have managed to secure hotels outside the city, especially in Obuasi and Jacobu in the Amansie Central of the Ashanti Region, to cater for members.

Meanwhile, a group of experts in decoration is expected to arrive in Kumasi on Wednesday to put the stadium in shape for the big gathering from Friday.
