NPP breaks myth in UWR

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has at last broken the myth surrounding the results of parliamentary elections in the Upper West Region (UWR).

From a margin of zero, the NPP succeeded in grabbing five parliamentary seats from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Wednesday, December 7, 2016 election.

The NDC had all along held all the 11 parliamentary seats in the region.

Dr Abdul Rashid Pelpuo’s seat in the Wa Central Constituency would have been the sixth but he managed to escape narrowly with a vote difference of 571.

Skirt and blouse

Apart from all the massive successes chalked up by the NPP in the parliamentary results, the presidential election results remained intact for the NDC. Hence, it was evident that the electorate voted skirt and blouse in the UWR.

In the Wa Central Constituency, Dr Pelpuo had 25,319 votes to win the seat from a total of 57,489 votes cast. The NPP candidate, Mr Tahiru Issahaku, followed closely, while the Progressive People’s Party’s (PPP’s) James Sohimwinye came third with 5,894 votes. The Convention People’s Party’s (CPP’s) candidate came fourth with 375 votes, Abdul Sherif Ghali of the People’s National Convention (PNC) came fifth with 199 votes while Kuunyine Edgard of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) had 96. The Electoral Commission (EC), which supervised the election, recorded 675 rejected ballots.

For the presidential election, President John Dramani Mahama polled 32,664 votes, while Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the NPP had 22,107 votes. Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom of PPP had 1,466 votes, followed by Dr Edward Nasigre Mahama of the PNC with 151 votes. Mr Ivor Kobina Greenstreet of the CPP had 139 votes, while Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings of the National Democratic Party (NDP) polled 56 votes, with Jacob Osei Yeboah, Independent, following up with 27 votes.

Female candidate

The incumbent and only female parliamentary candidate in the UWR who held the seat for one term also lost it in the Sissala-East Constituency to Mr Ridwan Dauda Abass of the NPP. Two incumbent ministers in the UWR also lost their seats to the NPP. They are Alhaji Amin Amidu Sulemani of the Sissala-West Constituency and the Minister for Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs, Dr Seidu Daannaa, for the Wa East Constituency.

In the Lawra Constituency, Mr Anthony Karbo of the NPP won the hearts of the people to represent them in Parliament when he polled 8,704 votes as against Mr Bede Ziedeng of the NDC with 7,476 votes, while Mr Sampson Abu, an independent candidate, polled 5,651 votes. Sa-Eed Hasiru of the CPP also got 124 votes.

Another constituency where the NDC lost its seat is the Nandom Constituency where Mr Ambrose Dery won the seat against Mr Richard Kuuire of the NDC and Mr Peter Kabriku Claver of the PPP.
