The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned what it describes as a “despicable and divisive” comment made by the Member of Parliament for Asante Akim South, Kwaku Asante Boateng, against former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
In an interview with Adom TV, the MP reportedly launched an unprovoked attack on Dr Bawumia, insisting he is unfit to lead the party.
The remarks have sparked widespread outrage, with many Ghanaians, including civil society actors and party members, condemning them as tribalistic and discriminatory.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the NPP’s National Secretariat distanced the party from the MP’s comments and reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to inclusivity, equality, and national unity.
“The NPP reiterates its longstanding commitment to inclusivity, equality, and national cohesion,” the statement said.
“As a political tradition founded on the principles of freedom, justice, democracy, and equal opportunity, the Party remains dedicated to fostering a society where every Ghanaian, irrespective of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, or social background, can participate meaningfully in national development.”
The party stressed that membership and recognition within the NPP are based on loyalty, commitment, and service, not on ethnicity or personal identity.
“The NPP welcomes all citizens who subscribe to its core values and principles and are willing to contribute to the advancement of Ghana’s democratic and developmental agenda,” the statement added.
Signed by the General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the statement further assured the public that the NPP will continue to uphold the dignity of every citizen and promote a political culture anchored in tolerance, respect, and inclusiveness.
The controversy comes at a time when the NPP is working to consolidate unity within its ranks following the 2024 elections, where Dr Bawumia led the party’s presidential ticket.
