NPP launches constituency campaign at Dome

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Wednesday launched its campaign in the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency with a massive rally that attracted the top echelon of the party, including its 2016 presidential candidate, Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo Addo.

It was as if it had been raining blue and white at the Atomic Park where the rally took place, as NPP flags, paraphernalia and supporters took centre stage.

The programme was supposed to start at 12 noon but it started at 3p.m. and really hit a crescendo when the party’s flag bearer arrived at 5p.m.

Amid cheers, singing and dancing, Nana Addo was welcomed by thousands of teeming supporters as he set foot on one of the party’s most fertile constituencies in the country.

Other notable party personalities who attended the event were the Minority Leader, Mr Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, acting General Secretary of the party, Mr John Boadu, the National Treasurer, Mr Abankwa Yeboah, and scores of the party’s Members of Parliament (MPs) from all over the country.

Factory policy

Speaking at the event, Nana Akufo Addo defended his ‘one factory one district’ policy and said it was not a political gimmick as claimed by his political opponent.

He said the rationale behind the policy was to provide more employment avenues for the youth and also promote economic activity at the district level.

“I will not stand in front of Ghanaians and disrespect them by promising things that I cannot deliver. An NPP government will implement the ‘one factory one district’ policy to the letter to provide more jobs for people,’’ he said.

He explained that it was the habit of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to describe any policy by the NPP that would ultimately benefit people as not feasible.

“After dismissing such policies, they adopt them and woefully fail to implement them or continue to improve on them.  Clear examples are the National Health Insurance Scheme, Northern Development Fund which they turned into SADA and the free Senior High School.

Vote NDC out

Nana Akufo Addo appealed to Ghanaians not to give the NDC a third term as that would amount to untold hardship and sluggish economic growth.

“President Mahama says he should be given another term for him to continue with his work. We need to ask him what he is coming to continue because he will definitely continue with the poverty, hardship, economic mismanagement and corruption,’’ he said.

He gave assurance that an NPP government would put in measures that would lead to economic growth “to enable Ghanaians to live under conditions where they can pay utility bills and develop themselves.’’

The MP for the constituency, Ms Sarah Adwoa Sarfo, urged Ghanaians to vote the NDC out of power because of their inability to manage the economy.

“This government claims that it is initiating developments projects, but the cost of most of the projects are bloated and not value for money. Such a situation is putting serious strain on our national purse,’’ she said.

Constituency

The Dome-Kwabenya Constituency was carved out of the then Ga North Constituency in 2004 and has since been a stronghold of the NPP.
