NPP responds to commission over Akufo-Addo’s causing financial loss indictment

The New Patriotic Party(NPP) has rejected findings by the Judgement Debt Commission to the effect that former Attorney-General, Nana Akufo-Addo, helped cause financial loss to the state in the sale of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) drill ship.

The ship was sold by President John Kufuor’s New Patriotic Party(NPP) administration to defray a 19.5 million cedi judgment debt owed Societe-General Bank in 2001.

According to the commission, the failure Mr Akufo-Addo, who was Attorney-General at the time,  to defend the state in court caused Ghana to pay a higher judgment debt than what it would have paid.

But in a statement Tuesday evening, the NPP denied that its flagbearer helped cause financial loss to the state.

“…at no point was any financial loss to the state occasioned by Nana Akufo-Addo’s actions in the matter, the party stated in the statement signed by Comunications Director, Nana Akomea.

“The Kufuor government should rather be commended for rescuing the GNPC sinking ship under the NDC and setting it back on its true course,” the statement said.

The NPP also accused the commission of making findings against Mr Akufo-Addo without inviting him to respond.

“Nana Akufo-Addo will no doubt fully respond to this issue when an official copy of the report of the Commission is made available,” the statement noted.
