NPP risks losing Northern Region in 2020 if . . . — Bugri Naabu

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) risks losing the Northern Region considerably in the 2020 election if steps are not taken to check the behaviour of some of the party’s Members of Parliament (MPs) which is responsible for the rejection of some District Chief Executives (DCEs) appointed by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in the region.

The Northern Regional Chairman of the NPP, Mr Daniel Bugri Naabu, stated this at the party’s Northern Regional Delegate’s Conference held in Tamale on Sunday.

He alleged that some of the party’s MPs in the region were responsible for the recent rejection of some DCEs by their respective assemblies in the region due to their covert and overt operations.

Electoral gains

He said the situation was working against the interest of the party in the region and if care was not taken, it would erode the electoral gains made by the party in the 2016 general election.

“The NPP risks losing the Northern Region considerably in the 2020 election if steps are not taken to check the behaviour of some of our MPs which is responsible for the rejection of some DCEs appointed by the President,” he stated,

He added, “If you say you campaigned for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to become the President then you must equally work to ensure that those he has appointed as DCEs in the region are confirmed by their assemblies”.

The infighting

Mr Bugri Naabu stated that the recent infighting in the party over the appointments of DCEs in the region should be blamed on the MPs and not the regional executive.

“I am telling you that the infighting over the appointment of DCEs if not checked now would affect the electoral fortunes of the party in the 2020 election,” he stated.

Rejection of DCEs

Most of the DCEs appointed by President Akufo-Addo for the Northern Region were rejected by their assemblies. Therefore, new persons had to be nominated. The Northern Region is yet to have its full complement of metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives (MMDCEs) to begin implementing the programmes and policies of the government.

The DCEs for Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo and Tolon are yet to be confirmed by their respective assemblies not forgetting the violent protests that greeted the appointment of Hajia Ayishetu Seidu as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Savelugu-Nanton.

Denial

Meanwhile, some MPs who spoke to the Daily Graphic at the party’s delegates conference have since denied the allegations made against them by Mr Bugri Naabu.
