PAG demands names and details behind EOCO’s record GH¢337m recoveries

The Progressive Alliance of Ghana (PAG) has demanded full disclosure from the Attorney General and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over the recovery of more than GH¢337 million in assets, insisting that the announcement of figures without details undermines transparency and public confidence.

In a press statement signed by its 2024 presidential candidate, Dr John Kpikpi, the party said it had taken note of remarks by the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, during the Government Accountability Series, in which he announced that “EOCO has exceeded its 2025 recovery target which was set at GH¢200,000,000. Recoveries currently stand at about GH¢337,476,119.59… This is the highest recovery in the history of the agency.”

While acknowledging the importance of retrieving proceeds of crime for the benefit of the Ghanaian people, PAG said it was dissatisfied with what it described as the failure of the Attorney General to disclose the identities of the individuals or institutions from whom the monies were recovered.

The party noted that, in his address, Dr Ayine explained that “Direct recoveries are recoveries that are deposited directly into the Exhibit Account… Indirect recoveries are recoveries that are paid directly to either GRA or the Consolidated Fund.” However, PAG argued that beyond these broad classifications, no further details were provided to enable the public to fully understand the nature and sources of the recoveries.

“Accountability demands more than the announcement of figures. It requires transparency, clarity and full disclosure,” the statement said, adding that the lack of detail raised concerns about the credibility of the anti corruption effort.

As a result, the Progressive Alliance of Ghana said it was formally demanding answers on what exactly was recovered by EOCO and in what form the assets or monies were retrieved, as well as the identities of those from whom the funds were recovered and the individuals or institutions responsible for the losses to the state.

The party also questioned the specific acts, offences or criminal conduct linked to the recoveries, the actions taken against persons alleged to have engaged in theft or economic crime, and whether any prosecutions, convictions or sanctions had followed. In addition, it called for clarity on how and for what purposes the recovered monies would be utilised for the benefit of the Ghanaian people.

PAG said naming offenders and explaining the consequences of their actions was central to deterring corruption and restoring confidence in the justice system, warning that the omission of such information only fuels public suspicion.

It therefore called on the Attorney General and the leadership of EOCO to provide a comprehensive public account of the recoveries in the interest of transparency, accountability and good governance.

The statement said the Progressive Alliance of Ghana remained committed to the principles of openness, justice and responsible leadership, and would continue to demand full accountability in the management and recovery of public resources.
