He said the nation would celebrate the late professor for the tremendous impact she made on female education, especially in Science and Mathematics education.

The President paid the tribute at the Flagstaff House last Tuesday when a delegation of the bereaved family formally informed him of the death of prof. Addy and preparations towards the funeral.

He said Prof. Addy made the study of Science and Mathematics so simple that many girls shed their fear for those subjects.

Science and Mathematics quiz

Mr Mahama said the dexterity with which Prof. Addy handled the Brillant Science and Mathematics Quiz on Ghana Television whipped up interest in the subjects among girls.

“And if today many girls are taking up Science and Mathematics in school, part of the credit goes to the late professor,” he added.

On Saturdays, the President said, it was not only students who watched the quiz but even adults, some with very little or no knowledge of the subjects.

Depth of knowledge

Mr Mahama recognised the depth of knowledge Prof. Addy carried in her lifetime and said it was a pity that death had robbed the nation of such an asset.

He said academia had lost a dedicated and reliable member, adding that the inclusion of the current Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof Ernest Aryeetey, and a former Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Ivan Addae-Mensah, in the delegation that visited the seat of government was a testimony of the respect she commanded in academia.

The President stated that the government was investing in Science and Mathematics education for girls by offering scholarships in that respect.

He said the government would liaise with the family to make Prof Addy’s funeral a fitting one.

Head of family delegation

The Head of the delegation, Nana Baah VII, the Omanhene of the Nankesedo Nyimfa Division of the Nkusukum State, told the President that the family was completed shattered by the demise of their loved one who brought so much fame not only to herself but also the entire family.

He said the funeral would be held on February 28 and March 1, 2014.
