Protect Ghana’s unity and tolerance - GBA on 2024 elections outcome

The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has urged Ghanaians to protect the country’s unity and tolerance, and asked for an immediate end to acts of lawlessness, such as property destruction and office takeovers, reported in some areas post Election 2024.

In a statement, the GBA commended Ghanaians for the successful conduct of the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections, describing the process as a reflection of the nation’s democratic maturity.

The GBA statement, issued on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, highlighted the generally peaceful nature of the elections held on December 7, acknowledging the commitment of citizens who turned up to vote and the stakeholders who ensured a transparent process.

The association congratulated President-Elect, John Dramani Mahama on his victory, stating that “the good people of Ghana have overwhelmingly spoken in his favour.”

Bawumia showed statesmanship for conceding

The association also lauded Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for conceding the election in a timely manner, describing it as a mark of statesmanship.

While celebrating the milestone, the GBA condemned reports of isolated violence, including incidents of gunfire that led to the loss of lives.

The Association extended its condolences to affected families and urged law enforcement agencies to act swiftly on all reported infractions.

The GBA called on Ghanaians to protect the nation’s unity and tolerance, urging an immediate end to acts of lawlessness, such as property destruction and office takeovers, reported in some areas.

The statement emphasised the need for all citizens to resolve disputes through legal means and reiterated the GBA’s hope that Ghana would continue to serve as a model of democracy in Africa.
