Redirect energies towards governance and urge your supporters to stop violent attacks - NPP MPs to NDC

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus in parliament has called on Ghanaians to be vigilant and report any suspicious or violent activity to the police and other relevant security agencies after the swearing-in of President-elect, John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday.

According to the NPP Members of Parliament (MPs), they have received information suggesting plans to intensify violent acts, such as the one which characterised the aftermath of the December 7 polls, which they claim were being orchestrated by alleged National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters.

They say their information is that the supporters will intensify their attacks immediately after the swearing-in ceremony.

At a press conference in Accra on Saturday [Jan 4, 2025], the Deputy Majority Leader and Member of Parliament (MP) for Asokwa, Patricia Appiagyei, alleged that the perceived NDC "thugs" were being sponsored by the leadership of the party.

"In addition to these troubling developments, we have received reliable intelligence indicating that these acts of violence and thuggery are being orchestrated by certain key elements of the NDC leadership.

She mentioned the names of some key leaders of the NDC as the ones behind the NDC supporters and inspiring them to unleash violence on innocent Ghanaians.

The caucus said it's flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, graciously conceded defeat within 14 hours after the polls and even before the official declaration from the Electoral Commission.

"This singular act of true leadership and statesmanship is the reason we continue to enjoy the peace we have as a country today," the caucus said.

The Deputy Majority Leader said unfortunately, the NDC took this as an opportunity to engage in acts of violence and lawlessness, undermining the very stability we all seek to protect.

The Majority caucus called on the NDC to redirect its energies towards governance and "leave NPP alone."

"We wish to remind the President-elect that his electoral mandate was given for him to formulate policies for the development of this country and not as an endorsement of chaos and lawlessness."

"We urge him to direct his focus toward the policies he intends to implement in the interest of national progress and how he plans to address the most pressing issues facing our nation," she said.

The Asokwa MP called on he Ghana Police Service and all other security agencies to remain on full alert, act with professionalism, and ensure that no one is considered above the law.
