Remembrance prayers for late Vice President Aliu Mahama set for Sunday

The family of the late former Vice President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, has announced that the 13th Islamic remembrance prayers in his honour will take place in Accra on Sunday, November 16, 2025.

The annual ceremony, observed consistently since his passing in 2012, is dedicated to seeking Allah’s continuous mercy upon his soul. It also serves as a moment for family, friends, political actors and members of the public to unite in remembering the life and legacy of the former Vice President.

This year’s gathering will be held at his residence on Switchback Road in Cantonments, where mourners and well-wishers will converge to offer prayers and reflect on his decades of service to Ghana.

The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, is expected to lead the prayers, marking the spiritual climax of the ceremony.

Family sources stressed that the remembrance aligns with Islamic teachings, where continuous prayers offered by loved ones for the departed are encouraged as a means of seeking divine mercy and blessings.

Alhaji Aliu Mahama, widely regarded as a distinguished statesman, served as Vice President of the Republic from January 7, 2001 to January 7, 2009 during the administration of President John Agyekum Kufuor. His tenure was marked by a strong focus on discipline, national development and public service.

Sunday’s ceremony is expected to draw significant attendance, as Ghanaians from diverse backgrounds gather once again to honour his memory and reflect on his enduring influence on national leadership.
