The National Executive Committee of the NPP yesterday met in Accra  to deliberate on varied issues, including the proposal for an early congress to elect a flag bearer ahead of the 2016 general election, before electing polling station executives.

Another part of the proposal was to cancel primaries for sitting Members of Parliament for the 2016 elections.

This proposal document had received a lot of mixed reaction among the rank and file of the party, creating a lot of anxiety for the party’s support base.

Mr Crabbe, in a letter to the National Council, said he was ready to foot the bills for holding the elections for new officers in all the 275 constituencies across the country.

“We are all enjoined to contribute our quota towards the good fortunes of our party. I am aware that the party would need to compile a new constituency album for elections comprising polling station executives and other mandated party officials for the purpose of electing in the first instance, members of the National Executive Committee and ultimately the next flag bearer of our party.

"I am by this letter, informing you that I have obtained the equipment, and trained personnel to undertake this exercise in all 275 constituencies at no cost to the party. As a party in opposition with significant resource challenges, hopefully this gesture will go a long way to reduce the cost burden on the party as it may also encourage others to contribute towards the elections of polling stations executives and party leadership across the country.

"I will be available for any further discussions if need be and look forward to a successful exercise to stand our party in good stead for a decisive and ultimately winsome contest of the 2016 General Elections,” he concluded.

In another development, the General Secretary of the NPP, Mr Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, has called for cool heads to prevail as the party’s NEC meets to find the way forward for the party.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Morning Show, Dwaso Nsem, yesterday, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, popularly known as ‘Sir John’, insisted it was refreshing that such a heated debate was ongoing about a proposal aimed at improving the party’s chances in future elections.

The NPP General Secretary pointed out that at this stage “it is only a proposal” and pledged that the “leadership of the party will factor the views and aspirations of the grassroots and the majority of the party into their decision.”

He discounted concerns expressed by a number of people that the proposal was at the instance of the national executive, and that they intended to foist it down the throat of the party, maintaining that the executives “would not do anything to derail” the political fortunes of the NPP.

Sir John, who is currently out of the country, was confident that the party would come out stronger and united, and cautioned party faithful to express their opinions on pertinent issues without resorting to insults.
