Speed up PNC constituency polls — Bashiru

An aspiring National Youth Organiser of the People's National Convention (PNC), Mr Eugene Tamado Koffikan Bashiru, has called on the leadership of the party to speed up constituency elections to enable the party to prepare adequately for the 2016 general election.

According to him, the party has been slow with the organisation of its constituency elections in the regions, adding that the 'earlier the better' to help in the reorganisation of the party towards the 2016 elections.

"As I am speaking to you now, the PNC has been able to hold constituency elections in Nanumba North and Chereponi in the Northern Region out of the 31 constituencies in the region,” he stated.

He said if care was not taken that would affect the organisation of the party's regional and national congresses.

Mr Bashiru made the call in an interview with the Daily Graphic in Tamale yesterday.

He said the party, at its national executive council meeting recently held in Accra, chose Wa, the Upper West Regional capital, as the venue for its national congress to elect new national officers but could not come out with a definite date for the congress due to the delay in the holding of constituency elections.

The aspiring National Youth Organiser stated that the Constitution of the party stipulated that constituency elections should be held before regional and national congresses and therefore his call for the speeding up of the holding of the elections stemmed from that portion of the constitution.

He noted that the party structures in the constituencies were not working “so how do we reorganise and prepare for the 2016 general election?” he queried, adding that his concern was that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) had both held their national congresses to elect national executives "so what is the PNC waiting for?" he questioned.

"If the party is able to organise its constituency elections early, it will enable it to go for its national congress by August this year in order to resolve all outstanding issues of the party before the 2016 election," he added.

Mr Bashiru added that his call for speeding up of constituency elections was on behalf of the youth wing of the party to enable them to work at all levels of the party from the constituency to the regional level.

He called for unity within the party and urged all members, especially the youth, to remain focused and resolute.

Mr Bashiru also called for all the Nkrumaist parties such as the PNC and Convention People's Party (CPP) to come together as one political party to fight the ‘two-party system’ in Ghana, involving the NDC and NPP, and also to present Ghanaians with a credible alternative.
