UFP declares support for NDC, Mahama’s re-election

The United Front Party (UFP) has declared  its support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the re-election bid of President John Dramani Mahama.

Declaring its support for President Mahama to be retained as President at a press conference in Accra yesterday, the party’s national chairman and disqualified flag bearer, Nana Agyenim Boateng, pledged the UFP’s determination to work tirelessly for the NDC to win two million additional votes in the Ashanti Region in this year’s polls.

Additionally,  he said the UFP would campaign massively for the NDC to be retained in government.

Reason for support

Stating the reasons why the UFP had declared its intention to support the NDC, Nana Agyenim Boateng said the party had compared the manifestos of both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and was convinced that of the NDC sought to address better the numerous challenges of Ghanaians if it was retained.

Flanked by the National Women’s Organiser, Ms Joana Antwi Adjei; the First Vice Chairman, Mr Canning Boamah; the National Treasurer, Mr Enock Anane; the Communications Director, Mr Michael Dwomoh, and the Deputy Communications Director of the party, Mr Moses Donko at the press conference, Nana Agyenim Boateng added that the peace in the NDC was one that the Ghanaian electorate could trust as against the tension in the NPP.

“Today, we are declaring our support for the NDC because the party’s manifesto is in tandem with ours and addresses the challenges of the Ghanaian.

“The leadership of President Mahama is also worthy of emulation, while that of the NPP under Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is tainted with disdain and acrimony,” he stressed.

Unanimous decision

When asked if the rank and file of the party were in agreement with the decision, Nana Agyenim Boateng stated that it was a unanimous decision arrived at after the National Executive Committee of the party met.

He also dismissed suggestions that he had been induced by the NDC to declare his support for the party, emphasising that he was not doing that to gain the favour of the President in order to appoint him as a minister in his cabinet in the event that the NDC emerged victorious.

“I was with the Young Elephant Movement of the NPP and if I needed any favour, it should have been that party. But I feel that the NDC is the party that listens to the plight of the Ghanaian,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the party said it would continue to support its parliamentary candidates in the various constituencies in the country.

UFP Disqualification

The UFP presidential candidate was among 12 political party candidates who were disqualified by the Electoral Commission (EC) from contesting the 2016 presidential election.

According to the EC, the candidates were disqualified for various acts of fraud, negligence,  among others.

However, Nana Agyenim Boateng expressed disappointment at the disqualification, but said “we will stage a come-back in 2020.”

Only last week, the Independent People’s Party (IPP) at a press conference also threw its weight behind the NPP to wrest power from the NDC.
