Your gov't is the worst - Minority reacts to President Akufo-Addo's tenure
The Minority in Parliament has described the administration of the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the worst in the 4th Republic, culminating in the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) unprecedented rejection at the December 7 polls.
It said the current administration had performed abysmally as Ghanaians continued to face alarming economic hardship, huge debt overhang and high unemployment.
"We have come to the end of the road for what has been undoubtedly the worst government under the Fourth Republic,” it said.
Vote of rejection.
Reacting to the President’s message on the state of the nation address in Parliament on Friday, the Deputy Minority Leader, Emmanuel Kofi Armah-Buah, said “this administration’s abysmal record was confirmed on December 7 when the people of Ghana returned the most overwhelming and emphatic vote of rejection of any government ever witnessed under the fourth republic."
"Mr President, you will be remembered as the first President who was cushioned by the IMF when you began and you are still being cushioned at the end of your term," he said.
Unfulfilled promises and hope
Mr Armah-Buah, who is the MP for Ellembele, described President Akufo-Addo's tenure as a persistent timely reminder of how not to govern the country.
He pointed out the failure of the President to complete his ambitious National Cathedral project, saying that "Mr President, you left something very important in your account”.
“You left out an account of your promise to God to build him a cathedral. Mr President, I will leave that for you to be between you and your God".
Mr Armah-Buah assured Ghanaians that the incoming administration, led by President-elect John Dramani Mahama, would offer hope of a better government.
He affirmed that the new government would work hard to lift the country from the current historic poor economy to reclaim its place and glory as the black star of Africa.
Quoting a scripture from Exodus 14:13, the Deputy Minority Leader said the the NDC government would deliver a good governance which would make Ghanaians forget about the existence of the NPP.
Commendation
Taking his turn, the Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin eulogised the President for his political record which commenced from his first term in the second Parliament in 1997.
He touted the President's investments in the education and health sectors, describing it as "unmatched and unequaled" in the country's history.
"History in its fair judgement will state that there came an Akufo-Addo whose record in the educational sector of our country is unmatched and unequalled. This is a man who is never afraid of challenges that confronts him."
“The Agenda 111, a very ambitious policy to revive our health sector and provide the health needs of the many vulnerable communities, is also unmatched," the Majority Leader stated.
Mr Afenyo-Markin further stated that the President Akufo-Addo-led government, in spite of the major challenges it faced including the COVID-19 pandemic, paid all government sectors, kept the lights on and ensured that over 5.7 million Ghanaian students had access to education.
He also commended the President for keeping the country safe in the midst of instabilities in the ECOWAS sub-region.
In his view, posterity would be proud of President Akufo-Addo’s administration as Ghana had experienced the best democracy under his leadership, saying that "posterity will be the utmost judge".
