The Blues confirmed they had made an offer for the England striker but insisted it did not  include the transfer or loan of any Chelsea players to Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho made his move after Rooney’s camp made it clear their man wants to be out of Old Trafford.

A Chelsea statement read: "Chelsea football club can confirm that yesterday it made a written offer to Manchester United for the transfer of Wayne Rooney.

"Although the terms of the offer are confidential, for avoidance of doubt and contrary to what is apparently being briefed to the press in Sydney, the proposed purchase does not include the transfer or loan of any players from Chelsea to Manchester United."

The England striker ripped into Old Trafford bosses last night, insisting he was "angry and confused" over comments by new boss David Moyes that he would play second fiddle to Robin van Persie.

SunSport is reliably informed that the cost Chelsea need to stump up to get Rooney is £80m — £52m in wages and a £28m fee.
