Ghana Black Stars B played a determined game to beat the Flying Eagles of Mali 1-0, in the WAFU 2017 tournament on Saturday at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium.

Bukom Banku v Samir Bastie bout postponed

NSA seeks approval to recruit 100 coaches

The National Sports Authority (NSA) has made a formal request  to the Ministry of Finance (MoF) to enable it hire over 100 coaches for the various national teams across different sporting disciplines in the country.

The NSA Director General, Robert Sarfo Mensah, told the Graphic Sports in Accra that the move was aimed at employing coaches who would be tasked to unearth talents and develop sports in the country.

Many people, if not everyone has a talent but not everyone knows what they are good at. Many will therefore, live their lives not knowing their talents partly due to lack of opportunities to develop them. This is one of the greatest challenges confronting sports development in the country.

Whilst it is a fact that schools remain Ghana’s best bet to unearthing young talent, the missing link has been how to go about it. Some of the greatest talents that Ghana has produced in sports like Michael Essien and Asamoah Gyan were unearthed at the school level and any project that seeks to encourage students to stay at school whilst playing sports in a safe environment must be encouraged.

A Technical Director at the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Oti Akenten, has lauded the organisers of the WAFU Cup of Nations, saying the participating countries need such tournaments to enhance their football development programmes.

The Black Stars B, who sold out a lucklustre performance in their first game of the competition, managed to sail through to the group stage after benefiting from an injury time spot kick last Saturday to get to the group stage.

The Black Stars of Ghana have dropped out of the top 50 countries in the FIFA World Rankings to 52nd place in the list released for the month of September on Thursday.

However, the Stars improved from ninth place in the August ranking to become the eight best team on the African continent for September.
