CAF postpones CHAN tournament to August 2025

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the postponement of the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN), which was originally set to take place in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

The tournament will now be held in August 2025. The 19-team event was initially scheduled for February 1 to February 28.

However, following an assessment by CAF inspectors in the three host countries, it was determined that they were not yet ready to host the competition due to inadequate infrastructure, including stadiums, training facilities, and hospitals.

To allow the nations time to improve these facilities, CAF has decided to reschedule the tournament for August 2025.

In a statement, CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe assured that the 2024 tournament would go on in August once the three countries have upgraded their facilities, as work is in progress.

“l am impressed with the ongoing construction and renovations of the football infrastructure and facilities in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda," Dr Motsepe said.

“I am confident that the stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals and other infrastructure and facilities will be at the requisite CAF standards for hosting, in August 2025, a very successful TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (“CHAN”) Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda 2024,” he added.

Among the three host nations, Kenya is currently playing its international football matches abroad because it lacks CAF-approved stadiums.

The 2025 CHAN tournament will serve as a test event for Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, all of which are also set to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals.

Meanwhile, the draw for the postponed CHAN tournament is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, January 15, in Nairobi, Kenya.
