Carreras, Alicia win Ada-Sogakope sailing race
The Ghana Racing Club plans to promote and popularise sailing to attract a younger generation of water sport enthusiasts.
Mr David Carreras, Commodore of the club, made the disclosure at the end of this year’s Ada-Sogakope Sailing Race at Ada-Foah.
He noted that the inspiring performance by a few children in the 25-kilometre adventure provided the motivation to encourage the involvement of younger participants in the water sport.
Mr Carreras and his wife, Alicia Del Peso, emerged winners of the race sponsored by Nissan Auto Parts through its Mercury Outboard Motor brand. Following in second position was the pair of Santiago Alvarez and Aina Carreras ahead of third-placed Damien Russquet who sailed with his children – Emile, Alexis and Line.
This year’s event involved 33 participants in a flotilla of 15 boats which sailed from Sogakope through a number of villages and ended at the private island near the Ada Estuary.
The MD of Auto Parts Ltd, Mr Subhi Accad, was joined by other senior management personnel of the company and other diplomats to present trophies to the winners.
The two-day event climaxed with a barbeque which attracted diplomats, business executives, media and officials of Auto Parts, led by Mr Subhi Accad, who promised his company’s continued support of the annual event despite the threat of high tides which have eaten away a significant portion of the island.
