— A forgotten hero

A few weeks ago, I came across Abukari Gariba drenched in sweat, trekking to the Baba Yara Sports Stadium from his Akwatialine-based residence.

Gariba, who is now 77 years old, was on his way to watch a football match involving his former club Kumasi Asante Kotoko at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kum

Where are the $2m multi-purpose courts?

An amount of $2 million provided by mining giant, AngloGold Ashanti, for the construction of multi-purpose courts in selected areas in the country to aid sports development seems to have found itself somewhere else.

The money was made available in late 2007 and the donors expected that with the cash provided before the start of the project, the facilities would be constructed in record time. If for nothing at all, the provision of the courts would have encouraged the sponsor to provide more support, and perhaps, also attract others to come on board to sponsor the NSA.

Stars B ready for Burkina test

Ghana’s Black Stars B squad storm Ouagadougou tomorrow in search of one of the three West Zone B spots for the Total 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Kenya against Burkina Faso with an unblemished preparatory record.

The Ghanaian side, mainly prepared for this major assignment by assistant coach Maxwell Konadu under the supervision of head coach, Kwasi Appiah, are two legs away from the Kenya Championship, just like Benin, Nigeria, Niger and Cote d’Ivoire who are chasing the two other slots for the zone.

It’s GH¢138,000, not $2m

THE National Sports Authority (NSA) says it has been asked to recover an amount of GH¢138,000 and not the the entire $2million provided by Anglogold Ashanti for the construction of multi-purpose courts in selected areas in the country.

According to the NSA Chief Executive, Robert Sarfo Mensah, steps are being taken to act on the recommendations of an Auditor-General’s report for them to retrieve the excess money paid over the certified contract sums for the construction of the multi-purpose courts.

GN Bank DOL: Hasaacas to add to King Faisal’s woes?

THEY both have lost the plot to return to the Ghana Premier League (GPL) next season, but there will be a lot to fight for when former GPL sides, King Faisal and sekondi Hasaacas clash in Kumasi for their Match Day 26 fixture of the Division One League (DOL).

Faisal, relegated over three seasons ago, were hoping to make a return next season, just as Hasaacas who dropped last season. Unfortunately, for both of them, Karela FC proved the stronger side and beat them to it, and now, they are left to scramble for good positions on the league table.

‘NSA needs $15m for Accra Stadium renovation`

The Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Robert Sarfo Mensah, has hinted that about $15 million is needed to renovate the Accra Sports Stadium.

This, he said, was because the stadium had been left to rot since its refurbishment for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2008, hence the need for a lot more resources to bring it back into shape.

London 2017 fiasco not surprising

If anyone had expected Team Ghana to return from the IAAF World Championships in London with medals, in spite of our lean contingent, that person has been left disappointed, as the performance of our athletes did not take them beyond the qualifying rounds.

But that should come as no surprise to anyone at all, given what was put in as preparations for the championships.
