Stars arrive in Kumasi ahead of Ethiopia game

The Black Stars arrived in Kumasi yesterday to finalise their preparations towards Sunday's 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Ethiopia at the Baba Yara Stadium.

Coach Kwasi Appiah's side began a non-residential training in Accra last week and left Accra for Kumasi around midday yesterday.

Black Stars skipper Asamoah Gyan insists his injury worries are behind him and he is ready to lead the senior national team past Ethiopia in their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

Gyan, 31, currently on a season-long loan at Al Ahli from Shanghai SIPG, has been plagued by niggling hamstring and ankle injuries over the first four months of the year.

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has excluded three players from his squad ahead of the trip to Kumasi for Sunday's 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifier against Ethiopia.

The Black Stars have spent the past four days in non-residential training in Accra and will travel to Kumasi on Monday to continue with preparations for the game.

Former Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote has died aged 30 after collapsing during training in China, a spokesman for the player has announced.

In his seven years at United the Ivory Coast player made over 150 appearances, including three last season.

Black Stars skipper Asamoah Gyan arrived in style for his first training session with the Black Stars shortly after touching down from his base in the United Arab Emirates.

Gyan who earns £227,000 a week (£11.8m annually) from Chinese club Shanghai SIPG was chauffeured to the Accra Sports Stadium in a customised Mercedes-Benz bus.

A thrilling encounter between league leaders Tesano Spinners and SmartLine@ Emefs was the highlight of the ongoing table tennis league being staged at the D.G. Hathiramani Hall of the Accra Stadium last Saturday.

The two clubs, both harbouring Nigerian imports, engaged in a game of wits and smashes as bedlam gripped the national hall. In the end, Spinners duo of Rilwan Akanbi and Ahmed Bello’s prowess edged out Emefs 3-2 in the pulsating encounter.

New sports fund for University of Ghana

The University of Ghana Sports Directorate has launched a sports fund designed to facilitate and support the development of student-athletes who are admitted to the institution.

According to the Director of Sports of the University of Ghana, Dr Bella Bello Bitugu, the fund which has been named the University of Ghana Sports Fund (UG-SF) becomes operational on August 1, 2017 and will also cater for the construction as well as maintenance of existing sports facilities at the University of Ghana campus in Legon.

Gyan, who owns boxing promotion company Baby Jet Promotions, says he would not allow Mayweather to leave the country during his two-day tour between June 15-16 without watching some Ghanaian pugilists in action.
