Champions Bechem United face Chelsea in MTN FA Cup

Defending champions Bechem United have been handed a tough Round of 16 tie after being drawn against Berekum Chelsea in the MTN FA Cup competition.

At the draw held in Accra yesterday, former champions, Medeama, were also pitted against Elmina Sharks for the round which takes place on the weekend of June 16 to June 18.

Kwasi Appiah holds first Black Stars training session

Black Stars coach, Kwasi Appiah held his first training session with the senior national team yesterday with sixteen players at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The session was Appiah’s first with the Black Stars ahead of his first competitive game, an African Cup of Nations qualifier against Ethiopia scheduled for Sunday, June 11 at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

Maxime Hamou, an up-and-coming tennis player, has been removed from the French Open and could face further punishment after repeatedly kissing and almost choke-holding a female reporter, who interviewed him live following his first-round loss Monday.

“The management of the tournament has decided to revoke Maxime Hamou’s accreditation following his reprehensible behavior with a journalist yesterday,” the French Tennis Federation said in a statement. The federation said it will review the incident before deciding on further sanctions.

The Badminton Association of Ghana has commended the President of the association, Mr Evans KojoYeboah, on his election as a council member of the Badminton Confederation of Africa (BCA) at their just ended Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Gold Coast, Australia.

Mr Yeboah was one of 15 members from other African countries elected to manage the affairs of African badminton for the next five years.

Baffoe crowned Sports Personality of the Year

Ghanaian football icon Anthony Baffoe was last Saturday crowned the 2016 SWAG Sports Personality of the Year at the 42nd MTN SWAG Awards held at the Banquet Hall of the State House in Accra.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who was the Special Guest of Honour, decorated Baffoe -- FIFA and CAF General Coordinator and the General Secretary of the Professionals Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG) -- with SWAG’s flagship award.

Table tennis league...Spinners still in the lead

Defending champions, the Immigration ping-pong team would have to continue playing catch up for a while as league leaders Spinners continued their winning ways after defeating Eastern Loopers and Fire Service, 3-0 and 3-2 respectively in the ongoing Table Tennis League.

In the week five fixtures played last Saturday at the D.G. Hathiramani Sports Hall of the Accra Stadium, Immigration also put aside the sudden resignation of their former coach to step their foot on the pedal and chase after Spinners.

Mali edge Black Starlets to win African U-17 Championship

A 21st-minute penalty converted by midfielder Mamadou Samake gave the Aiglonnets of Mali a lone goal victory over Ghana’s Black Starlets at the Stade de L’ Amite in Libreville yesterday to win the African Under-17 Championship for a historic second successive time.

The Starlets fell behind after conceding a penalty when Ghanaian defender John Otu brought down Ibrahim Kane. Ghana’s goalkeeper Danlad Ibrahim bravely saved the first kick but Samake reacted quickly to latch onto the rebound and drilled the ball home for what turned out to be the championship-winning goal.

Prez promises to revamp sports as Baffoe wins SWAG topmost award

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has re-emphasised his government’s commitment to ensure sports thrive in the country with a promise to see to it that all sporting disciplines receive the necessary support.

As proof of his government’s commitment, President Akufo Addo said the sports budget received a 100 per cent increment this year to ensure that the sports ministry got adequate funding to support sports in the country.
