GBA to embark on regional outreach
The President of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), Lawyer Peter Zwennes, has promised to embark on an intensive regional outreach programme to promote and develop boxing across the country in order to fulfil GBA’s vision and policies.

Mr Zwennes disclosed that he had scheduled a meeting with the vice-president and acting President of the Ghana Amateur Boxing Federation (GABF), Mr Peter Lamptey, to discuss how to join forces with the GBA Committees at the regional level to focus on grass-roots promotion and development of boxing as part of GBA’s plans to support amateur boxing throughout the country.
The GBA president revealed this to the Central Regional GBA president, Mr Twintoh Walker, in Accra and also informed him of the GBA Board’s approval of his new appointment as the chairman of the reconstituted National GBA Regional Cut reach Committee.
Mr Twintoh Walker has also been assigned additional responsibilities for the Western Region to ensure the stability and sustainability of boxing in the region.
The Central Regional president accepted the position and stated that the Regional Committees would collaborate with the Regional Amateur Federations nationwide to promote and develop boxing.
He said the focus would be to organise boxing gala, league and knockout competitions for the registered communities, towns and constituent boxing clubs in the region.
According to Mr Walker, the GBA and GABF intend to introduce Security Services Boxing League (SESBOLG) and have, therefore, chosen Western Region as a pilot because the region has all the security services available.
Mr Walker explained that the programme would also be extended to schools and colleges, especially boys high schools in the Western and Central Regions, notably St John’s, G.S.T.S, St Mary’s in the Western Region and St Augustine’s College, Adisadel College and Mfantsipim School in the Central Region, on a selected as pilot schools to engage in the first-ever Secondary School Boxing Festival (SESBOFEST) in the Western Region.
The communities boxing clubs, Security Boxing Squads and Schools Boxing Teams that will be selected would be registered and provided with boxing facilities and equipment to ensure regular competitions so that by a year or two a good number of mature amateur boxers could turn professionals.
The Central Region GBA president appealed for a standard boxing ring, equipment, boxers’ footwear and outfits for both the Central and Western regions to help make the initiative a success.
He urged companies and individual philanthropists to come on board to support the programme through long—term sponsorship deals.
