‘Respect safety rules at stadia’ to avoid another May 9 disaster

Football fans have been urged to respect safety guidelines and precautions in order to save lives during crowd disturbances at the various national stadia and prevent the tragedy that hit Ghana on May 9, 2001, after a football game.

Speakers at the ceremony to mark the 16th anniversary of the May 9 stadium tragedy, including the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Isaac Asiamah, were unanimous in their conviction that more lives could have been saved if spectators knew of measures to take in the event of such disasters.

Frimpong Manso made an earlier-than-expected exit through Kumasi Asante Kotoko’s managerial revolving door yesterday as the club made the surprise appointment of Steven Pollack as their caretaker coach until the end of the season.

The former Berekum Chelsea Technical Director becomes Kotoko’s fourth technical head — the club started the season with Michael Osei who was sacked and replaced with Croatian Zdravko Logarusic who made way for Frimpong Manso last month.

Herbert lauds Asantehene for supporting May 9 victims

A former Asante Kotoko Football Club chairman, Mr Herbert Mensah, has lauded the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his guidance and support in caring for the victims and dependents of the May 9 Stadium Disaster.

He said from the first minute when he saw and carried the first body of a fan till presently, he had relied on the support and wise counsel of Otumfuo, who is also the owner of Kotoko, which had made it possible for him to cater for the victims and dependants of those who died on May 9, 2001.

FIFA ratifies nine African World Cup places

The FIFA Council has ratified that Africa will get nine automatic places when the World Cup expands to 48 teams in 2026 at its meeting on Wednesday in Bahrain.

Memorial held for victims of May 9 stadium tragedy

A memorial service has been held at the Accra Sports Stadium in honour of the 127 football fans who lost their lives 16 years ago in the aftermath of a football match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

The lives were lost after Hearts scored two late goals to pip their bitter rivals Kotoko 2-1 in a Ghana Premier League mid-week tie on May 9, 2001.
