56 Nations set for Ghana Badminton Grand Slam 2025 showdown in Accra

The international spotlight will shine on the Borteyman Sports Complex next month as Ghana gears up to host over 56 countries for the highly anticipated 2025 Ghana Badminton Grand Slam, a multi-tiered festival of world-class competition offering critical Olympic and world ranking points.

Running from August 1 - 17, the event promises to transform Accra into a badminton battleground, attracting elite talent from around the globe -– including powerhouses such as Australia, Japan, Egypt, Nigeria and the Pacific nation of Vanuatu -– in a month-long celebration of speed, skill and shuttle smashes.

Organised in partnership with the Badminton Confederation of Africa (BCA), the Grand Slam has been structured into five distinctive tournaments, each serving a specific development and competitive purpose.

The action began on a vibrant note with the ???Africa AirBadminton Championships???? at the Laboma Beach from July 3- 6, a World Cup qualifying event won by a formidable Egyptian side.

The competition now shifts to the state-of-the-art Borteyman Sports Complex, starting with the Junior Mixed Team Championships (August 1-3), followed by the Junior Individual Championships (August 4-6) and the fast-paced Junior AirBadminton Championships (6th–7th August).

These youth-focused events carry valuable continental ranking points for qualification to the 2026 Youth Olympic Games, reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of African sports stars.

Capping off the tournament is the JE Wilson Ghana International Series from August 11-17, a marquee Olympic qualifying event for Los Angeles 2028, where elite African and international players will battle for glory, pride and precious ranking points.

Ghana will be looking to defend its 2024 Africa Junior Championship title and with record participation from across five continents, the tournament is being hailed as a landmark moment in Ghana’s sporting calendar – and a golden opportunity for sports tourism and economic stimulation.

“This Grand Slam is more than just competition; it’s a celebration of sport, culture and unity,” said Evans Yeboah, President of the Ghana Badminton Association (GBA)."

“It aligns with Ghana’s wider ambition of becoming a hub for international sporting events, following the success of the Accra 2023 African Games.”

“The dual-format – youth and elite – makes this Grand Slam a comprehensive badminton festival. The sheer diversity of participants underlines the event’s global appeal and its potential to drive cultural exchange, tourism and lasting sporting legacies. Fans can expect thrilling rallies, fierce rivalries and a carnival-like atmosphere.”
