A fire outbreak at GRIDCo's Akosombo substation has caused a significant reduction in power supply to multiple regions, forcing the Electricity Company of Ghana to implement widespread load curtailment across the Ashanti, Volta, Oti, Central, and Accra East Regions on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.

The ECG announced that the fire, which damaged critical infrastructure at the national grid's key transmission hub, has severely constrained generation capacity, necessitating rolling power cuts across affected areas until the generation profile improves.

Ashanti Region: Evening curtailment from 6:00pm to 12:00am

Residents and businesses in the Ashanti Region will experience power cuts from 6:00 pm to 12:00 am on Tuesday. GRIDCo working to restore normalcy

The ECG assured affected customers that power supply will be restored immediately once the generation profile improves. The company deeply regretted the inconvenience caused by the fire outbreak and the subsequent curtailments.
