New Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz strengthens Ghana bench with experienced goalkeeper trainer Dan Gaspar

The Black Stars’ technical bench for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been strengthened with the addition of experienced goalkeeper trainer Dan Gaspar, who is set to join Ghana’s backroom staff as preparations intensify for the global tournament.

Gaspar, currently goalkeeper coach at Hartford Athletic, is expected to assume a similar role with the national team, marking his fourth appearance at the FIFA World Cup in a coaching capacity.

His appointment comes as part of a broader restructuring of the technical team under newly appointed head coach Carlos Queiroz, who has begun assembling a blend of international expertise and local experience ahead of the competition.

Gaspar and Queiroz share a long-standing professional relationship spanning nearly three decades, having previously worked together with the Portugal and Iran national teams during past World Cup campaigns. Their reunion is expected to bolster Ghana’s technical preparation, particularly in the area of goalkeeping.

Reacting to his appointment with his club's website, Gaspar described the opportunity as an important personal milestone. “Representing Ghana on the world stage in my home country is an incredible honor. I’m grateful for the opportunity and excited to get to work with such a talented group of players and staff. Competing at the World Cup again is a dream come true. I’m fully committed to helping the team prepare, perform, and make our supporters proud,” he said.

Officials at Hartford Athletic also paid tribute to the coach’s contribution, highlighting his role in the club’s recent progress, including their USL Jägermeister Cup success and improved defensive performances.

Former Black Stars players, including Fatau Dauda and John Paintsil, are expected to remain part of the backroom staff, providing institutional knowledge and support as the team transitions under new leadership.

Queiroz, who was appointed earlier this month, has already outlined his intention to build a competitive squad capable of making an impact at the tournament, drawing on his extensive experience managing at previous World Cups and top clubs.

Ghana will be making its fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup 2026, which will be staged across Canada, Mexico and the United States. The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama national football team, England national football team and Croatia national football team.

The team will open its campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, before facing England and Croatia in subsequent group matches, as Ghana seeks to make a strong impression on the global stage.
