Both teams started brightly but none of them succeeded in breaking the opponent’s defence in full-time which resulted in a narrow penalty shoot-out win for the hosts, Winneba United to record their first three points.

With the competition being the first of its kind, the Aboakyir Cup, which is scheduled to reach a climax on May 8, is aimed to promote unity and peace, as well as creating excitement among the people of Efutu in the Central Region.

In Group A, Suncity FC from Accra will be competiting alongside Windy Professionals from Winneba, Spirrows FC from Awutu-Senya and Ahenfo FC from Apam.

The other teams in Group B include host team Winneba United, Young Millionaires from Gomoa-Lome, Items FC from Saltpond and Liverpool Nobles from Winneba.

The Chief Executive Officer of Winneba United, James Kofi Annan in a pre-tournament press conference said the football competition would create awareness of the Aboakyir Festival and draw huge crowds from every part of the country.

“The Aboakyir Cup is gaining momentum in the media and this is an opportunity for sponsors to come on board to support a game that has a huge following”.

Mr Annan noted that the Aboakyir Cup would serve as a unifying force and as such, will not affiliate itself with any of the two Asafo groups.

The event is being organised by Nyce Media in partnership with Winneba United and the Run-Off Restaurant at the Winneba Junction.
