The Country Director of Herbalife Ghana Limited, Mr Frederick Amissah, has urged sports teams in Africa to take the nutritional needs of their athletes more seriously.

He said adhering to the nutritional needs of their athletes would enhance their performance during international tournaments.

"I believe Africans and blacks are naturally endowed to perform well, and with the incorporation of sports science and better nutrition the whole sports world will be under our feet,"Mr Amissah told the Daily Graphic last Friday when he welcomed members of Kumasi Asante Kotoko to the Herbalife offices in Accra.

According to Mr Amissah, although Africans are endowed naturally with athletic ability, poor nutrition had become a stumbling block thus preventing sportsmen and sportswomen from reaching their full potential.

"The difference that nutrition makes is the difference between Africa and the rest of the world when it comes to sports.

"When our athletes relocate to Europe we all see their performances, improve drastically.

This is because they adhere to their nutrition requirements.

“I believe it is about time we stopped relying on only our natural abilities, and looked at nutrition first and also the whole of sports science as an industry,” Mr Amissah said.

He added that the quest to promote sporting excellence in Africa motivated Herbalife to sign a two-year renewable non-financial sponsorship deal with Kumasi Asante Kotoko, as its official nutrition partner to help the club realise its dreams.
