Akonnor ready to convince sons to play for Ghana

Former Black Stars Head Coach, Charles Kwablan Akonnor, has hinted that he would make a conscious effort to convince his sons to represent Ghana at the senior level should the opportunity arise.

Akonnor explained that because both of his boys were born and raised in Germany, their connection to Ghana was limited.

However, as a father who represented Ghana at various levels and coached the Black Stars, he said, he would not hesitate to intervene if the chance to play for the Black Stars presented itself.

“It’s difficult to convince them to come to Ghana because they grew up in Germany, but of course, if the need be or if the opportunity arises, we will be able to make that decision,” he said.

His elder son, Charles Jesaja Herrmann, 25, recently signed for German lower-division side FC Bocholt, while his younger son, Charles Kwablan Herrmann, is expected to sign a new contract with a Belgian club in the coming days.

Speaking in an interview with Graphic Sports, Akonnor described his younger son’s imminent move to Belgium as a significant step in his career, stressing that he would play an active role in ensuring the transfer was successful.

The former Ghana coach revealed that he had little influence in the transfer of his first son, explaining that the move happened very quickly. Despite this, he said he was not disappointed with how events unfolded.

Akonnor added that his elder son had once been tipped to become one of the best young talents but had suffered a dip in form in recent years. He, however, expressed confidence that Jesaja would bounce back and rediscover the qualities that once set him apart.

Jesaja, born in 2000, has previously featured for German clubs, including VfL Wolfsburg and Hannover 96, before his move to FC Bocholt.

His younger brother, Charles Kwablan Herrmann, born in 2006, is a highly rated winger who has enjoyed major success with Germany’s youth teams.

He was part of the side that won the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup and the UEFA U-17 European Championship. In 2024, he moved from Borussia Dortmund to Borussia Mönchengladbach.
