Asamoah Gyan steps away from partisan politics after serving on Bawumia manifesto committee

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has announced his decision to step away from partisan politics, following his recent involvement in the political sphere.

However, in a public statement released on September 11, 2024, Gyan outlined his vision for youth development through sports and philanthropy, emphasizing his desire to distance himself from political affiliations.

The football star-turned-philanthropist expressed that his primary focus is now on humanitarian work and uplifting the youth of Ghana.

In a tweet that preceded his official statement, Gyan said, "I haven’t been fair to the youth and the people of Ghana. Henceforth, I am not affiliated with any political party. I will continue with my humanitarian work and help the youth of Ghana in my own small way. Nothing political. I wish all the political parties a peaceful election on December 7, 2024. God bless our homeland Ghana. Thank you."

New focus on youth empowerment

Gyan's decision to step back from politics follows months of involvement in Dr. Bawumia’s campaign efforts. His role in shaping the party’s manifesto was seen as a significant step into the political arena. However, Gyan has made it clear that his heart lies in giving back to his community through sports and education rather than in politics.

In his statement, the former Sunderland striker highlighted his plans for the Asamoah Gyan Foundation, which aims to provide Ghanaian youth with opportunities through sports academies, training centers, and mentorship programs. "This is not about politics; I am fully independent from political influence. This is about our children, our communities, and our continent," he said.

Gyan, the record score for the senior national team added that his foundation will work with international organizations, royal families, and philanthropic partners to create lasting change for young people. "Sports saved me and gave me purpose. Its power goes beyond winning or losing—it's about overcoming setbacks, pushing through challenges, and believing in dreams," Gyan noted, stressing his belief that sports can inspire and unite communities.

Broader humanitarian goals

The Asamoah Gyan Foundation's efforts align with broader global objectives, including the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which focus on education, health, and equality. Gyan’s vision is to prepare young Ghanaians for life beyond sports by promoting character development, education, and life skills.

While some on social media have applauded Gyan’s dedication to humanitarian causes, others expressed surprise at his sudden withdrawal from politics, given his influential role in the NPP manifesto committee.
