Ashgold, Medeama renew rivalry as Premier League kicks off

Barely two weeks after Ashgold succumbed to Medeama SC in the season-opening GFA Super Cup, both teams cross each other’s path again at the Obuasi Len Clay stadium as the Soccer Miners begin their Premier League title defence at home on Sunday.

On Sunday, the defending league champions will have the luxury of playing in front of their home fans at full strength as they seek their pound of flesh, following their 0-1 loss to Medeama in Accra.

This game comes on the heels of a winning start by Ashgold in their continental campaign as they defeated M.O. Bejaia in their CAf Champions League preliminary round clash at Obuasi last Sunday.

Although Coach Bashir Hayford conceded the slim victory was not what they expected to the start of their continental campaign, he remained optimistic the victory would help psyche-up his boys ahead of this weekend’s encounter.

Medeama, the MTN FA Cup holders, are also in fine form and are unlikely to be intimidated by their away trip to Obuasi, with their confident coach, Tom Strand, discovering the key to unlocking the stubborn Ashgold defence  built around Tijani Joshua, Augustine Sefa, Kadri Mohammed and Awudu Nafui.

Swede Strand would be counting on the magic of Akwesi Donsu, Kwame Boahene, Malik Akowuah and Enoch Atta Agyei to replicate their earlier victory against the ‘Miners’ at the Accra Sports Stadium in the Super Cup.

Elsewhere, Accra Hearts of Oak will host New Edubiase United at the Accra Sports Stadium, new entrants Ebusua Dwarfs host Dreams FC at the Robert Mensah stadium in Cape Coast, while Liberty Professionals will trek to the Bechem Park to encounter Bechem FC.

Inter Allies will welcome Aduana Stars to the Tema Park, Wa All Stars host stubborn Sekondi Hasaacas at the Wa Park, debutants Techiman FC welcome Berekum Chelsea to the Techiman Park, while Kumasi Asante Kotoko travel to battle WAFA at Sogakope.
