The Black Queens produced a disciplined display at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca to secure the point they needed to advance to the knockout stage, surviving a determined second-half fightback from a resilient Mali side.
Evelyn Badu gave Ghana a crucial lead deep into first-half stoppage time, but Kadidiatou Diabate equalised shortly after the restart to set up a nervy finale as Mali chased the victory required to keep their tournament hopes alive.
The draw, combined with Cape Verde's 1-1 stalemate against Cameroon in the group's other fixture, saw Cameroon finish top of Group D with seven points. Ghana claimed second place on four points, edging out Mali on goal difference, while tournament debutants Cape Verde bowed out with one point.
For the Black Queens, qualification marks another significant step under Swedish head coach Kim Lars Björkegren as Ghana returns to the WAFCON quarter-finals and keeps alive its ambition of securing a place at the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup.
After opening their campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over Cape Verde before suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Cameroon, Ghana entered the final group match knowing that avoiding defeat would almost certainly be enough to progress.
Mali arrived with the same four-point target in sight but required victory to guarantee a place in the last eight, ensuring an intense battle from the opening whistle.
As expected, both sides approached the encounter cautiously.
Ghana dominated possession during the early exchanges, patiently circulating the ball and attempting to dictate the tempo, while Mali remained compact defensively and looked dangerous whenever they broke forward.
The Lady Eagles suffered an early setback in the 22nd minute when Aïssata Kanté was forced off through injury, prompting an early tactical reshuffle by head coach Birama Konaté.
Despite Ghana's territorial dominance, genuine scoring opportunities proved limited as both defences maintained their discipline.
Badu breaks the deadlock
Just as the first half appeared destined to end goalless, Ghana found the breakthrough.
Deep into stoppage time, Comfort Yeboah produced an excellent pass into the penalty area and Evelyn Badu timed her run perfectly before calmly slotting the ball beyond the goalkeeper to give the Black Queens a priceless 1-0 advantage.
The goal sparked wild celebrations among the Ghanaian players and technical bench, with the strike placing Ghana firmly on course for a place in the knockout stage.
Mali respond immediately
Any hopes that the goal would settle Ghana's nerves disappeared soon after the restart.
Only five minutes into the second half, Mali levelled the scores when Kadidiatou Diabate found space inside the Ghana penalty area and finished clinically past the goalkeeper to reignite her side's qualification hopes.
Sensing an opportunity, Mali pushed more players forward, increased the intensity of their pressing and began asking serious questions of Ghana's defence.
The Black Queens, however, remained composed, defending with organisation while continuing to threaten on quick counter-attacks.
Tactical changes
With the game hanging in the balance, Björkegren turned to his bench in search of fresh energy.
Stella Nyamekye replaced Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah before Doris Boaduwaa, Linda Owusu and Ajegipina Zakaria were introduced as Ghana looked to regain control and exploit spaces left by Mali's attacking approach.
Konaté also responded with attacking substitutions as Mali desperately searched for the winner that would have taken them into the quarter-finals.
The closing stages produced several anxious moments, but Ghana's defence stood firm under sustained pressure.
Despite both sides creating promising attacking situations, neither could find the decisive breakthrough till the game ended.
