Cape Coast Stadium handed over to Ministry

Chinese contractors, China Jiangxi Corporation for International Economic and Technical Cooperation, officially handed over the Cape Coast Stadium to the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MOYS) in Accra yesterday.

Constructed at a cost of $30 million, the 15,000-seater, multipurpose stadium comes with eight athletics tracks, one football pitch with natural turf, two outdoor basketball courts, one tennis court, one boxing training field, one gym, as well as athlete dormitories.

 

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, who received documents on the stadium on behalf of the government, disclosed that the stadium will be officially inaugurated by President John Dramani Mahama on May 3 in Cape Coast.

"We appreciate the support of the Chinese government in constructing this facility I also commend the work of my predecessors and especially my deputy, Vincent Oppong Asamoah, who has been in charge of the project," the Minister said.

"The stadium will be inaugurated on May 3 by President John Mahama who will be joined by the Gabonese President on a day of sporting events.

"No entry fees will be required and the Black Satellites will play the China U-19, Adisadel College will face Mfantsipim School, Ebusua Dwarfs will take on Vipers, among many other sporting events," he added.

Madam Sun Baohong, the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, who participated in the hand-over ceremony on behalf of the Chinese government, said  the stadium was the largest ever China-aided project in the country.

She stated that the stadium would stimulate economic development in Cape Coast and Ghana.

"This ultra-modern stadium, will undoubtedly further promote the development of sports in Ghana, it will diversify the culture and sports life of the Ghanaian people as well as enhance the tourism prospects of Cape Coast which will stimulate economic development," she said.
