The impressive performance of Ghana’s senior female team, the Black Queens at the 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON), has earned them multiple nominations in the CAF Awards.
The list of nominees released by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Friday, has the Queens nominated for the Best Team of the Year, while four individuals of the team have also earned nominations for the respective categories.
Coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren who took charge of the team last March and led them to the bronze medal finish at the WAFCON in Morocco last July, has been nominated for the Coach of the Year.
He is up against the coaches of the top four teams at the WAFCON with Justin Madugu (Nigeria), Jorge Vilda (Morocco)
and Desiree Ellis (South Africa) also listed.
Three of the Queens, captain Portia Boakye, goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan Findib, and Stella Nyamekye (Young Player), have all earned nominations for the awards for which the final shortlist will be announced in November.
A panel of experts made up of CAF Technical & Development Committee members, experienced coaches, CAF Legends as well as selected media representatives chose the 10 nominees for each category considering the performance in all competitions for both club and country.
The CAF Awards ceremony will honour the players, coaches and teams that have made a significant impact for the period under consideration of 6 January to 15 October 2025.
