Come watch our league matches : Clubs appeal to fans

Premier League clubs have sent a passionate appeal to football fans in the country to renew their passion for the game by attending local league matches when the new season begins on February 20.

This, according to the clubs, will not only help revive the interest in the game, but also help them raise money to support the clubs in the face of the current situation where there is no sponsorship for the Premier League.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, most senior club officials who pleaded anonymity, expressed worry about the apparent lack of interest in the local league compared to the interest fans have generated for foreign leagues, especially the top competitions in Europe, a situation which they also described as having had 'dire financial consequence on their finances so far as gate proceeds were concerned.'

"It is not enough for us to blame the Ghana Football Association (GFA) as having 'killed' local football. We are all to blame in a way. However, we can change the situation by paying to watch the league matches.

"At least if for nothing at all, it will help the clubs raise money from the gate proceeds and that will mean being able to also secure the services of more quality players the fans would want to see in action," the officials said.

Attendance to local league matches have seen a nosedive in the past few seasons and several attempts have been made to regenerate interest from the fans.

Apart from Accra Hearts of Oak -Asante Kotoko matches that attract quite a huge crowd, attendances to league matches have been very poor, but the clubs are hoping the situation will change this season.
