Ghanaian-Australian golfer Danny List has called for greater investment in Ghana’s golf infrastructure, stressing that while the country has the talent to produce world-class players, the sport lacks the necessary support and facilities.
Speaking at a Meet the Press event in Accra on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, List, the first West African to play on the DP World Tour, said Ghana has the right conditions for golf to thrive but remains too football-focused, limiting opportunities for other sports.
“There is no reason why Ghana can’t develop great golfers,” he said.
”I learned to play here, and back then, the facilities were even worse, there was no driving range at Achimota Golf Club. Now we have one, which is a big step in the right direction, but there’s still a long way to go.”

Mr List believes investing in golf courses and training facilities could unlock the potential of young Ghanaian players, many of whom struggle to gain exposure.
“Ghana is known for producing world-class athletes, but in golf, we’ve never had the right investment,” he said.
”The talent is there, but without quality courses and consistent support, it’s hard for young players to break through.”
The golfer, who recently competed at The Genesis Invitational on the PGA Tour, said he has held informal discussions with Ghanaian sports officials about the need for greater government and private sector involvement in golf development.
“When I speak to people involved in sport within the government, even they acknowledge that too much attention is placed on football,” he said.
“Golf doesn’t get the funding it needs, but with the right investment, Ghana can start producing top players.”
Despite his busy schedule, Mr List remains committed to growing golf in Ghana and helping young players succeed.
He said his Danny List Foundation has already started sending talented juniors abroad for training and competition.
“I’m doing what I can, but real change will only happen if we get more people to believe in the sport and invest in it,” he said.
Mr List, who is currently preparing for his next DP World Tour tournament in South Africa, said he hopes to see golf become a mainstream sport in Ghana in the coming years.
