Europa League final: Manchester United and Tottenham clash tonight
The stage is set for an all-English showdown in the Europa League final, as Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur face off tonight at San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao, battling for European glory.
Remarkably, the winners of this evening's clash could become the lowest league finishers ever to claim a major European trophy — and will certainly be the lowest-ranked team to qualify for the Champions League.
Manchester United currently sit 16th in the Premier League, with Tottenham just behind in 17th. Between them, they’ve suffered a staggering 39 league defeats this season.
Since February 2nd, the only league games either side has won have come against relegated teams — or against each other.
Their points tallies are so low that, in previous seasons, either club could have faced relegation.
“I can't remember a game with such high stakes and pressure for both teams,” said former Celtic striker Chris Sutton on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club.
And yet, by the end of the night, one of these struggling sides will be celebrating European triumph — and booking a surprise return to the riches of next season's UEFA Champions League.
