GBF, NSA leadership hold talks on amateur boxing development

The Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has assured the newly elected leadership of the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) that the welfare and long-term development of amateur boxers will remain central to the NSA’s policies and programmes.

Mr Ankrah gave the assurance during a courtesy call by the GBF executives at his office at the Accra Sports Stadium yesterday. He stressed the need for a strong, united amateur boxing structure as the foundation for a vibrant and sustainable professional boxing scene in Ghana.

Calling for greater cohesion within the amateur boxing fraternity, the NSA boss pledged his outfit’s commitment to easing the federation’s financial constraints to enable the smooth organisation of national championships and other key competitions.

“We must improve the interface of amateur boxing and begin serious preparations for the Commonwealth Games,” Mr Ampofo Ankrah emphasised.

The GBF delegation was led by its newly elected President, Dauda Fuseini, and included First Vice President Nii Gonti Adzor and other members of the executive. The visit was primarily to solicit institutional support and funding for the federation’s programmes and planned activities.

Mr Fuseini acknowledged the challenges inherited from the previous administration and said his mandate was to confront them head-on. “The burden is heavy, but with the support of the NSA, we will overcome it,” he said, adding that the new leadership is committed to restructuring the federation to make it more transparent, accountable and forward-looking.

As part of its immediate plans, Mr Fuseini announced that the GBF would organise a National Individual Boxing Championship from January 29 to February 1, 2026.

The competition, he explained, will serve as a key selection platform for boxers to represent Ghana at the Commonwealth Games and other international assignments.

In response, the NSA boss reaffirmed his organisation's full backing for the new GBF leadership, pledging support for initiatives aimed at revitalising amateur boxing and restoring Ghana’s status as a powerhouse in the sport.
