According to an eye witness, Henry Asare, a mini bus with registration number ER 4212 C failed in an attempt to climb a small hill on the Adukrom road running over the referee who was standing by the road side after a work out.

The GFA in a statement issued on Wednesday morning described the deceased as one of the most promising referees it had listed for a 2017 FIFA referees course.

"It was with profound regret that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) learnt of the tragic death of referee Emmanuel Ofei on Tuesday July 26," the statement said.

"Whiles we await full details of the incident, the thoughts and prayers of the entire GFA membership are with the bereaved family and loved ones at this sad time.

"Referee Ofei who officiated the Match day 19 game between Ashantigold and Inter Allies, was regarded as one of the association's promising referees and was selected for the 2017 FIFA referees course. The GFA and the entire Ghana football family will sorely miss him. May his gentle soul rest in peace".

Meanwhile the GFA has asked for referees and players to also wear black arm bands at today's games.
