Ghana Hockey Association organises seminar
In their desire to attract sponsorship packages from corporate bodies, institutions and individuals to make their participation in international tournaments more successful, the Ghana Hockey Association (GHA) is organising a sensitisation seminar for retired and active ladies in hockey at the conference hall of the Theodosia Oko Hockey Stadium on Wednesday, July 13, 2016.
The seminar, which is on the theme 'Capturing Africa Women's Hockey in 2017', also seeks to provide a platform for the participants to have fruitful interactions with hockey players.
This, according to the GHA, would motivate the players to be more focused in their career to win laurels for themselves and for the nation in future tournaments.
A member of the GHA, Madam Elizabeth Safoah King, expressed concern about the lack of state support for the sport over the years, saying the situation was not only making some hockey players to be apathetic towards the sport, but also undermining the meaningful development of hockey.
She disclosed to the Daily Graphic that Ghana would participate in the World League Round 2 early in September, but was yet to secure the needed funds to make their participation possible.
According to Madam King, Ghana had been drawn in a tough group which had Nigeria, Kenya, Namibia and Zimbabwe, hence the need for them to prepare adequately in order to top the group and qualify for the World tournament.
“Our immediate assignment is the World League Round 2 in the first week in September 2016 in Ghana, but notwithstanding all our efforts, we haven’t secured any state funding. That is why we are organising this seminar to see the way forward,” she lamented.
