Ghanaian cyclist nears end of 10,000km solo ride from Germany to Accra
Ghanaian cyclist Emmanuel Adjei is on the final stretch of an extraordinary 10,000-kilometre solo cycling expedition from Germany to Ghana and is expected to arrive in Accra on Friday, September 19.
The 90-day journey, dubbed Bike2MyRoots, has taken Adjei through 12 countries, including Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, The Gambia and, most recently, Sierra Leone. He has so far covered more than 8,000km in his quest to raise €100,000 for EduSpots, a Ghanaian charity supporting community-led education across 11 regions of the country.
Adjei, who was born in Accra and now works in Munich, Germany, has faced challenging conditions, from the rugged Atlas Mountains of Morocco to the desert roads of Mauritania and the humid coastlines of West Africa. Along the way, he has documented his adventure on Instagram, sharing glimpses of desert treks, roadside camping, and the physical and mental endurance demanded by the challenge.
His journey has drawn media attention and sparked curiosity in the communities he has passed through.
Speaking about his mission, Adjei explained: “This cycling project is not solely about seeking the thrills of an adventure. Inspired by the saying ‘become the change you wish to see in the world,’ I am driven to use cycling to mobilise funds, support, and raise awareness to ignite and sustain community-led change through education and empowerment in deprived Ghanaian communities.”
So far, Bike2MyRoots has raised more than €14,000 to support EduSpots’ network of over 40 community learning hubs known as “Spots.” The organisation works with more than 400 volunteer “Catalysts” who run education clubs in areas such as literacy, STEM, digital skills, gender equity, and environmental awareness.
Adu Boahen Carlos, Chair of EduSpots’ Catalyst Committee, praised the initiative, saying:
“We wish Emmanuel all the best with the final part of this incredible journey to Accra. All of EduSpots’ Catalysts are behind you. Let’s turn your passion into education for everyone.”
Adjei will be welcomed at Independence Square in Accra on September 19 by supporters, family and EduSpots representatives. His homecoming will continue with a durbar in his hometown of Teshie on Saturday, September 20.
The cyclist’s feat will mark the first time a Ghanaian has undertaken such an intercontinental journey by bicycle. Supporters are encouraged to participate in the campaign by creating their own fundraising rides under the initiative Cycle in Tandem or by donating through the Bike2MyRoots Raisely page.
