'I am not an opportunist': Francis Amuzu denies chasing World Cup spot with Black Stars switch

Former Belgian youth international Francis Amuzu has dismissed suggestions that his decision to represent Ghana is driven by the prospect of playing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Gremio forward, who was born in Accra but raised in Belgium, said his desire to play for the Black Stars comes from pride and family heritage, not opportunism.

“I was born in Ghana, so I’m happy they qualified for the World Cup. It’s a wonderful tournament to play in,” Amuzu told a Brazilian outlet.

Amuzu explained that he has held a Ghanaian passport for the past two years and that his decision is influenced by his late father, who was a Ghanaian footballer, and his close relationship with former Anderlecht teammate Majeed Ashimeru.

The 26-year-old previously turned down a call-up to the national team in 2022 but has now made himself available for selection after Ghana sealed qualification for a fifth World Cup appearance.

However, Amuzu insists his commitment to Ghana is long-term and not tied to the global showpiece.

“If it’s for the World Cup, it will be nice,” he told Asempa FM. “If it’s after the World Cup, it’s also nice, I will be happy. It is a dream for me to play for the national team of Ghana. I know also that I have to perform well to get a call-up. If it [call-up] comes, good. If it doesn’t come, I have to work harder.”

Amuzu’s declaration has generated debate among fans and analysts, with some questioning the timing of his decision. Still, the winger maintains that representing Ghana has always been part of his ambition.

Amuzu, who has represented Belgium at the U-19 and U-21 levels, joined Brazilian side Gremio this year after a long spell at Belgian giants Anderlecht.
