IFAB approves new red card rules for mouth-covering, walk-off protests ahead of 2026 World Cup

Footballers who cover their mouths during confrontations on the pitch to conceal potentially abusive or derogatory remarks could face red cards under new rules approved by the International Football Association Board.

At a special meeting held in Vancouver, Canada, IFAB unanimously adopted two amendments proposed by FIFA to address discriminatory and inappropriate behaviour ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Under the new guidelines, competition organisers may instruct referees to issue a red card to any player who covers their mouth during a confrontation with an opponent, particularly where there is suspicion of abusive language.

A second amendment allows referees to send off players who leave the field of play in protest of decisions. The rule also applies to team officials who encourage such actions. Additionally, any team that causes a match to be abandoned could forfeit the game.

These changes will be communicated to all 48 participating teams in the coming weeks, although their implementation will remain at the discretion of individual competition organisers.

The move follows recent incidents in top-level football, including a UEFA Champions League match involving Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni and Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior, where abusive language was allegedly concealed. It also comes after a controversial walk-off during the Africa Cup of Nations final involving Senegal.

Gianni Infantino has been a strong advocate for stricter disciplinary measures to uphold respect and integrity in the game.

The new rules aim to strengthen accountability, promote fair play and curb misconduct on football’s biggest stage.
