I’m not impressed with Otto Addo’s performance – Sports Minister Kofi Adams

The Minister for Youth and Sports, Kofi Adams, has voiced his dissatisfaction with the performance of Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, warning that Ghana’s national team still faces a tough path to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be hosted in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.

His comments add to the mounting pressure on the Black Stars’ technical team to deliver consistent results and restore public confidence in the squad ahead of key international tournaments.

On Friday, September 5, the Black Stars were held to a 1-1 draw by Chad, before narrowly edging Mali 1-0 on Monday, September 8. Despite the win, Mr. Adams described the team’s performance as unconvincing.

Speaking in a radio interveiw with Citi FM on Wednesday morning [September 10, 2025], the Minister expressed concern about Ghana’s inconsistent displays in the ongoing World Cup qualifiers.

“Very soon, AFCON will kick off in Morocco. Are we going to be part of it? No—we’ll be watching on TV. We haven’t even secured World Cup qualification yet. We still need at least a win and a draw to be certain that no one in our group can overtake us,” he stated.

Mr Adams emphasized that Otto Addo's performance does not merit praise at this stage.

“If I tell you I’m impressed, then it means I don’t understand my job. I’m not. There’s a lot of room for improvement. Even the coach himself admits when he gets things wrong and takes responsibility. But the question is: how long can you keep taking blame for poor decisions?” he questioned.

The Black Stars currently sit atop Group I in the CAF World Cup qualifiers but must secure at least four points from their remaining two matches to guarantee a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
