The president of the GWF, Mr Ben Nunoo Mensah, who made the revelation, said participating in the Olympics was not a top priority, but would be a good experience for the weightlifters.

"Currently, I hear there is only one gentleman from track and field who has qualified for the Olympics," Mr Nunoo Mensah told the Daily Graphic last Tuesday in an interview.

“We are going for our African qualifiers in Yaounde, Cameroun in May, hence the need for the government and corporate bodies to raise funds for us to participate.

"We expect an athlete like Forrester Osei or Christian Amoah to make it to the Olympics, " he added.

"The Olympics is big, so you need to prepare well, people have been preparing well for the last four years for the event.

"Weightlifting is only going to add up to the numbers, because i see the lifts that those going to the olympics are making and I don’t see any of my weightlifters winning a medal.

"Going to the Olympics is good, so if we get an athlete to go that is fine, but for us it is not a top priority,” he said.
