The week-long event at Anloga, dubbed the "51 Southern Zone Sports Festival", commences today and ends on February 20.

This year's event promises to be keenly contested with many of the long-standing records made during the inter-house competition coming under threat from the current generation of athletes.

During a visit to the host schools, feverish preparations were underway, all geared towards making this year's events a sell-out.

According to the Physical Instructor of the Zion College, Mr Paul Atsu Ocloo, his school was ready for the event, adding that everything was in place for the festival.

"I'm hoping that when the various teams begin to arrive, Zico will welcome them with open arms.I'm expecting competitors and spectators alike to enjoy themselves and be thrilled,” he said.

The Keta Senior High School (Ketasco), who won the girls’ volleyball, handball, basketball,  as well as the boys’ athletics and table tennis, is expected to face stiff competition from the Zico and Anseco teams, who placed second and third respectively during last year's events.

The Southern Zone Sports Festival is an annual event that brings students from second-cycle institutions in the southern part of the Volta Region to compete in track and field events.

Outstanding athletes in the events will form a team that will represent the Volta Region during national or regional events.
